The Journos: Grandparents and So Much More
Esther and Yehuda Journo are very special volunteers at Yemin Orde Youth Village. They serve as grandparents to the hundreds of children at the Village and always have a welcome and friendly smile for their "grandchildren."
Esther and Yehuda work in the Village’s temporary library where they have created a pleasant and inviting environment for visitors. Inside the library, they organize special exhibits and create informative displays where students can learn and discover new areas of interest.
The Journos arrived at Yemin Orde in November, 2011. They wanted to help the children in the Village after hearing about the destructive wildfire in December 2010. Esther was a teacher for 30 years, and Yehuda served as the Manager of the Department of Youth, Culture and Sports at the local council of Shafir (near Ashkelon). Since their retirement, the Journos have committed themselves to volunteerism and helping children.
They are now called the grandmother and grandfather of Yemin Orde. Each evening, the Journos host girls and boys for hot drinks, cakes and conversation. Their kindness and warmth is appreciated by everyone.
The Journos have three children and 13 grandchildren, in addition to their Yemin Orde grandchildren.
