Snapshots from the Village
Graduation 2010
The weeks leading up to commencement ceremonies for the most recent graduates of Yemin Orde Youth Village were especially magical and exciting as the children rehearsed and prepared for the arrival of visitors from all over the country coming to cheer their accomplishments.
Strains of "When the Saints Go Marching In" played by a band of younger peers was a fitting accompaniment to the 105 members of this year’s class when they paraded down the aisle at the beginning of the outdoor event. The crowd overflowed with graduates from years past, many in army uniform. They know they always have a place at the Village.
Isascar Mekonen, this year’s Graduate of the Year and a member of the class of 1985, is the highest-ranking Ethiopian officer in the Israel Defense Forces. He credits Yemin Orde with giving him the ability to pursue an officer’s training course when others discouraged his aspirations. He is now a business executive who takes greatest pride in his family and work in the community. Everyone listened closely to Isascar’s story, one he was especially delighted to share with an audience including his friend and mentor Dr. Chaim Peri. Village Director Benni Fischer presented Isascar with his award.
A musical show written and performed by the children concluded this special evening. They depicted various aspects of their lives and studies. Confidence and hope for the future were clear themes of the vignettes, which showcased Yemin Orde’s unique cultural mix.
Alex Schwartz, an American summer volunteer, was among those in the audience. "It was striking to see the amazing European and African dancing side-by-side," he said. "This can only be done at Yemin Orde."
