#GivingTuesday campaign to raise funds for graduate scholarships

The global-giving campaign, #GivingTuesday, is set for Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017. Friends of Yemin Orde  will participate in this one-day fundraising effort with a campaign to raise $36,000 for scholarships for its graduates.

Funds raised will support academic scholarships and emergency financial assistance for graduates of Yemin Orde Youth Village in Israel. The goal for this one-day fundraising campaign is $36,000, with each graduate who applies receiving approximately $1,000 at Yemin Orde’s annual Graduates Day program. The program typically takes place in December at the Village. Scholarships for graduates are supported primarily by gifts to FYO.

In 2016, 130 graduates received scholarships for higher education or financial aid to ease economic challenges faced by many young adults. Friends of Yemin Orde is the philanthropic partner of Yemin Orde Youth Village and Village Way Educational Initiatives.

Graduates meet with youth and ‘give back’ to Village

The Village is home, school and safe haven to 430 at-risk youth from all over the world, including Ethiopia, the former Soviet Union, France, Eastern Europe and Brazil. Most of the youth at Yemin Orde have experienced trauma: from abandonment and isolation to loss and extreme poverty. With the help of the Village’s dedicated staff, fragile teens develop self-esteem, leadership skills, strong cultural identity and a positive outlook on life. Yemin Orde’s fragile children find a family and a future.

The Village’s Graduates Day is one of the most important events of the year when alumni return and meet in groups with their younger counterparts. Graduates share the challenges faced after graduation as well as their achievements. In this way, graduates can “give back” to the Village, as well as network with alumni, visit staff members and hear news about their friends.

“For many of our graduates, who come with little to no financial support from their families, choosing higher education can be a huge economic burden,” said Shmuli Bing, Director, Yemin Orde Youth Village. “Our graduates remain connected to the Village throughout their lives and know that the promise ‘Yemin Orde will always be there for you’ remains true and constant.”

Yemin Orde graduates are active and successful in Israel

Yemin Orde’s graduates are active and successful in Israeli daily life. They are military and political leaders, educators, lawyers, and musicians and hold jobs in high tech, health care and public safety.

The important Jewish tenet of Tikkun Olam (social justice, charity) is an important healing element of Yemin Orde’s successful Village Way educational methodology.

Traditions and values of Judaism are woven into every aspect of life at the Village. Yemin Orde’s at-risk immigrant youth volunteer in retirement homes, hospitals and schools. Helping others lends meaning to their lives as they struggle to adapt to Israeli culture.

The worldwide #GivingTuesday campaign harnesses the power of personal philanthropy and inspires generations of donors to give generously to the charities and causes they support.
